I'd like to see an abolition of removable gems for skills - you just don't lose skill that easily and you can't gain skill that easily. I'd like a certain statistic to represent your skill with certian weapons, and when you fight creatures with that class of weapon it increases your skill.

Eg,
Snikch critical hits Zombie for 100 points of damage!
Snikch's dagger skill increases by 0.1!

yeah, i think it's good to in crease you're skills but using that certain skill.
I support Thanquols idea, but i would probebly be restricted to short blades, long blades, axes, spears, staffs and hammers for examlpe.
If yu had one skill for every weapon you're skill list would be huge:

Dagger 4,2
short sword 8,1
katana 2,1
hand axe 0,4
broadsword 7,2
schimtar 1,5
warhammer 3,1
bastard sword 2,1
doubble axe 0,1
claymore 14,7
etc.

It would be too confusing, short blades, long blades, axes, spears, staffs and hammers would be enough imo

Then give a limit to the amount of skills you have points in.

Maybe limit the number of weapons/combat style/magic skills you can learn by your class.

Example Fighter is aloud to learn 5 weapon types out of the list, 2 combat styles and 1 magic.

Wizard can Learn 2 weapon, 1 combat syle and 5 magic. The higher your class in the tree the more you can learn.

Meaning a specialized fighter like a Swordman coul learn 7 weapon skills, 4 combat styles and 2 magic.

Incase you are asking, by combat style I mean something that gives you bonus in certain situations and you get a malus in others.

The thing that bugs me in this is.. life has no limits (except from death), so why should a mmorpg? :/ Let people have no limits except for stats (so people wouldn't train dozen combat skills easily just for getting the best weapon in game etc).

If weapons raise your skil in certain areas how do you ascertain when they raise them?
If it is having the weapon equipped for a certain period of time then people will just sit and idle for ages with weapons on, if it is the amount of monsters then people will kill low level monsters, and if it is exp per kill, then surely there is no difference between your idea and normal leveling.
