The red-eyed man peered through a filter of grimy glass to a world beyond distorted by washes of endless rain. He blinked back long black hair; an impatient fury seeming barely contained in the crimson of his irises. Crimson like the blood that would be spilled today in his name. The anger was restrained only by the man’s self-made circuitbreakers, layers of control built over four long years. Years of learning, loving, waiting. Years nurturing a power without control into a cool, electric intellect. A plan. The man reached down with a single gloved hand to draw forth a silver chalice from around his neck, letting it dazzle him in reflecting what little light filtered into the secret chamber. He let the icon dangle, whispering words half-prayer, half ancient battle-song. Soft footfalls jerked him out of speculative anxiety and into real excitement .
“Luna…” The girl, a young woman of perhaps twenty-one summers scraped back damp sun-blonde hair from a soft face with a hint of mischief in the eyes. She stepped lightly over the threshold to join the man at his windowside vigil, both trying and not trying to catch a glimpse of her lord’s face under the hood he wore. Straight-backed like a fine berdiche, the girl’s compact physique appeared diminutive next to the lithe tallness of her lord. The long trenchcoat emphasised confident curves; from beneath the coat’s hem peeked highly polished steel toecaps.
“Lord, everyone is in place.” Her accent was not unlike that of the hooded man. “Dvorak reports the Lord Protector is calling an end to today’s summit. He should be making his way under guard to his personal quarters a few hundred yards to the south in maybe twenty minutes.” The girl took a breath, waiting for the reassuring inclination of her lord’s head.
“If all our operatives are positioned adequately, you can give the order. And what are the code words to begin spellshaping?”
“‘Benedek is my shield’, lord.”
“You are a good girl. The best. You have the love of the true god, and you have my love.”
“And… and you have mine, lord,” Luna whispered. He smiled at that, waved a hand to tell her she was dismissed. Luna turned to leave; the hooded man’s gentle voice followed her,
“Oh…and tell mister Braxis to stop his lurking downstairs in the barroom, have Finch send him up here at once, him and his new Neophyte. We have some time to kill… and besides, I don’t trust the old rogue down there with my wife.”
“Yes, lord.”
She bowed out, cutting the thin shaft of light let in by the open door to a slit, then to nothing as she clicked shut the handle. Inside, the man exhaled, walked from the windowsill to sit in shadow on the rooms’ far side. A stiff whisky calmed his nerves; he found solace once more in the silver chalice lying cold against the swift thump of his heart. Soon, the hooded man mused, the process of Rimsin’s rebirth could begin as the great god of wisdom intended. Soon.
