Nope, no pay for play, just $50 to buy the game.

just in case you didn't know, www.guildwars.com

its a fun game, and theres little grind. and the company that made it(arenanet) is actually a group of the leading developers from starcraft/diablo/diablo 2/warcraft/warcraft 2 that left blizzard.

just so you guys know.. guild wars has a different marketing strategy which will force you the player to buy several 50$ box expansions to continue to play the game.. and when you total that up for 2-3 boxes a year thats 100-150$ which is the exact same amount you would spend for pay to play.

Pay to play really isn't that bad.. a can of soda a day. Thats it. Smile

I was tempted to buy GW because I already had a guild planned. The graphics is great in the game and the landschape is beatiful.

Somehow though.. I bought WoW.

actually kal, you don't 'need' to buy the expansions, they just add on to the story. not to mention you won't have to worry about being ganked or have people ks from you, and you can't be 'l33t' just because you have no life and play a game religiously. it doesn't take very long to level up to the max(20)

Sum Ting Wong - you will be surprised. You will find that there is something in the expansion that your character must have to do something in the game in order to 'match' other players. I highly doubt it will be just content with an optional choice to buy it. There is no way a company can afford to hold up several or even 1 MMOG server on simply game sales alone. It is next to impossible.

So expect something to be added to each expansion where it makes you think "Well if I don't get that expansion my character is no match for those that get the expansion" .

Ultima Online had the samething with some of their expansions back in the early days. All the cool items and new equipment were in the expansions as well as new classes etc..

As I said originally you will find yourself buying the expansion to the game to be equal on playing grounds with everyone else or you will have already left the game already because of how 'quick' it is to get to level 20.

It may be different than this but I highly doubt it or the game may have a very short life trying to keep up with server payments as the game grows.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, GW will not have new servers for every expansion. Getting the expansion will just allow you to access more parts of the world where newer items would be available.

Also, GW has specifically stated that you will NOT need the expansions to be on a level playing field with everyone else. That's one of the reasons I like that game, it's MUCH more dependant on skill as opposed to equipment.
