You'd get regimental formations, squares if you want, where people have to go to talk. It's unrealistic, but it'd work..

What happens if two people (or groups of people) are on the overworld map and within visible range of each other, but can't chat due to them being on either side of this "invisible boundry?"

There should be a range that one can "hear" other chat that is relative to the player's proximity to other players'.

If this sounds confusing, think of it like the light coming from a torch effect. When the light from two torches intersect, the players are within range of each other.

In addition, chat should be divided into channels, and a /global chat channel could be useful. Players could switch this global channel on or off as they wish, as well as the proximity channel, the party channel, the whisper channel, and the guild channel.

I think a better way of putting this is radial chatting... You can only hear general chatter within so many squares of yourself... Tells, clan/guild chat, and fellowship chats would of course be unaffected by that. As for making them all on separate channels... That's gonna start filling up the screen with lines of text rather then playable area... I'm not a real fan of that.

This change isn't because of Kal's request to change it, it's to tell the community that I'm pissed at him because he fucked me over by not sticking up for me when he should have, instead he blasted me. I have no problem with Daria or any of it's other staff. It was changed in response to his lies about fixing it, which he did NOT do.

I have to agree. I like the way WiA's chat worked and I'd like to see that in DoD too.
